Through original artwork, sketches, demonstrations, and hands-on activities, students will discover how an illustrator takes words on a page and transforms them into characters, settings, and visual stories.<\/p>\n<h3>1. Meet the Illustrator: My Journey Into Children\u2019s Books<\/h3>\n<p>I\u2019ll introduce myself and share how I became a children\u2019s book illustrator, what inspired me to pursue illustration, and what it\u2019s like to create artwork for young readers.<\/p>\n<p>Students will learn that illustrating a children\u2019s book involves much more than drawing. We\u2019ll explore imagination, observation, experimentation, problem-solving, and perseverance\u2014and how an illustrator develops a personal style and learns to tell stories through pictures.<\/p>\n<h3>2. From Manuscript to Finished Illustration<\/h3>\n<p>Students will have the opportunity to see original sketches, drawings, paintings, and finished illustrations from my books.<\/p>\n<p>Together, we\u2019ll follow an illustration from its earliest stages to the finished artwork. I\u2019ll show students how an illustrator begins by reading and interpreting the manuscript, developing ideas, creating rough sketches, refining characters and settings, and making revisions before creating the final artwork.<\/p>\n<p>Students will see how an illustrator makes decisions about:<\/p>\n<ul data-spread=\"false\">\n<li>\n<p><strong>Characters and expressions<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Setting and atmosphere<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Composition and perspective<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Color and mood<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>Details that help tell the story<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><strong>How pictures can show things that words don&#8217;t say<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I\u2019ll also share examples of sketches and artwork that changed along the way, helping students understand that revision is an important part of the creative process.<\/p>\n<p>Whenever possible, students will have the opportunity to see and explore some of the actual tools of the trade, including brushes, paints, paper, pencils, and other materials used to create illustrations.<\/p>\n<h3>3. The Art of Visual Storytelling<\/h3>\n<p>One of the most exciting parts of illustrating a children\u2019s book is learning how to tell a story without using words.<\/p>\n<p>Students will discover how an illustrator can use a character\u2019s expression, body language, color, setting, and small visual details to communicate emotions and ideas.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ll look at how a single page of text can inspire many different illustrations and how each illustrator brings their own imagination and point of view to a story.<\/p>\n<h3>4. Interactive Art Workshop<\/h3>\n<p>Students will become illustrators themselves during a fun, hands-on drawing activity.<\/p>\n<p>The workshop can be adapted to the age and interests of the students.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Younger Students:<\/strong><br \/>We\u2019ll draw together as a group, creating characters, animals, objects, or imaginative scenes. Students will learn simple techniques for developing characters and using their imaginations to create their own artwork.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Older Elementary Students:<\/strong><br \/>I\u2019ll read a short passage from one of my books and ask students to imagine how they would illustrate it. They\u2019ll then create their own interpretation of the scene.<\/p>\n<p>Students will discover that there is no single \u201ccorrect\u201d picture. The same words can inspire many completely different illustrations\u2014and that\u2019s one of the wonderful things about art!<\/p>\n<p><em>Workshops can be adapted in length and complexity. Because of the hands-on nature of the activity, art workshops are best suited for groups of approximately 20 students or fewer.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3>5. Behind the Scenes: A Day in the Life of a Children\u2019s Book Illustrator<\/h3>\n<p>Through a PowerPoint presentation, students will get a glimpse into the everyday world of a professional children\u2019s book illustrator.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ll visit my studio, meet my studio dogs, and see where I work and create. Students will see the different stages of an illustration coming to life, from the first sketch to the finished artwork.<\/p>\n<p>This behind-the-scenes look will give students a better understanding of what an illustrator actually does and what happens before a finished book reaches a classroom, library, or bookstore.<\/p>\n<h3>6. Questions &amp; Answers<\/h3>\n<p>Students will have an opportunity to ask questions about illustration, children\u2019s books, drawing, painting, creativity, and working as a professional illustrator.<\/p>\n<p>Questions can range from <strong>\u201cHow do you draw animals?\u201d<\/strong> to <strong>\u201cHow long does it take to illustrate a book?\u201d<\/strong> Students are encouraged to ask anything they have always wondered about the world of children\u2019s book illustration.<\/p>\n<h3>7. Book Signing<\/h3>\n<p>I\u2019m happy to sign copies of my books for students, teachers, and families.<\/p>\n<p>Book signing arrangements can be coordinated with the school or library in advance.
